Setod phone numbers
A phone number we buy and hold for your workspace, so an agent can answer calls, place calls and text without you opening a Twilio account. Pro and Business plans only.
What you get
A Canadian or US number that lives in a sub-account we manage for you. Inbound calls and texts wake an agent through a Phone call or SMS trigger; outbound texts and calls go through the send_sms and place_call tools. You see the connector under Connectors like any other, and every message and call lands in Conversations.
- Pro: 1 number. Business: 3 numbers. The limit shows on Plan & Usage as “Setod phone numbers”.
- The number is yours for as long as the plan is paid. If you leave, you have 30 days to port it out.
- You never see Twilio credentials. We hold them, rotate them, and bill the usage onto your Setod invoice.
Setting one up
- Business profile. Carriers require a real business behind every number. Enter the legal name, address, website and a contact. For a Canadian address you also need a 9-digit Business Number (optionally with the RC0001-style program account suffix); the form checks the digits before it lets you continue.
- Review. US profiles are approved instantly. Canadian profiles go to Twilio for review, which usually takes a day or two. While that is pending the connector shows Under review; you can already pick a number and we buy it the moment the profile is approved.
- Pick a number. Choose a country and area code, pick one of the available numbers, and it is bought and wired up automatically (voice URL, SMS webhook and status callbacks). Nothing to paste anywhere.
- Attach to an agent. On the agent's When it runs tab add a Phone call trigger (for calls) or an SMS trigger (for texts) and select the Setod number.
Identity verification unlocks outbound
Until the workspace owner has verified their identity, the number is inbound and reply only: the agent can answer calls, and it can text back to someone inside the conversation they started, but it cannot send a cold message or place a call. Verification is a one-time Stripe Identity check (government ID plus a selfie) started from the connector's settings. Once it passes, outbound SMS and outbound calling are enabled on every Setod number in the workspace.
Why the gate exists
Cold outbound messaging is where phone abuse happens, and carriers hold the account holder responsible. Knowing who is behind each workspace is what lets us give you a number without a contract or a Twilio application of your own.
Outbound SMS rules
Every message an agent sends passes a safety check before it leaves. The check blocks anything that asks the recipient for a password, code, PIN or payment details, and any link that is shortened, uses a raw IP address or does not match your business website. Messages the check is unsure about are held for your approval like any gated tool, and they appear on the Approvals page with the reason.
Recipients must be in a country on the connector's allow list (Canada and the US by default). Each message segment is metered at US$0.03 and shows up as “SMS messages” on Plan & Usage.
Outbound calls
place_call dials someone and hands the live call to the agent, with the purpose and opening line you (or the agent) supplied. It respects polite calling hours in the recipient's time zone - weekdays 09:00–21:30, weekends 10:00–18:00 - and hangs up if a voicemail or answering machine picks up. The agent needs an enabled Phone call trigger on the number, and that trigger's voice engine and language settings apply.
A call reserves CA$0.10 of the daily spend cap when it starts and draws from the plan's included voice minutes (Pro 200, Business 1000 per month; extra minutes are billed as overage). Each call is capped by the trigger's max call minutes (default 10, settable 1–60) and ends after five minutes of silence.
Daily limits
Limits are per workspace per calendar day (UTC), seeded from your plan. An owner can lower any of them from the connector's settings; raising above the plan default is not possible.
| Limit | Pro | Business |
|---|---|---|
| SMS per day | 200 | 1000 |
| SMS to one recipient per day | 5 | 10 |
| Outbound calls per day | 20 | 100 |
| Outbound call minutes per day | 60 | 300 |
| Spend per day | CA$10 | CA$40 |
When a day's spend passes 80% of the cap the owner gets a notification. Hitting a limit refuses the send or call with a clear reason the agent can read back, and the connector card turns to Error so you notice. It clears by itself the next time a send is allowed (the counters reset at midnight UTC).
Billing, suspension and leaving
- Payment fails: the number is suspended at once (inbound still works, outbound and new purchases stop) and restored when the invoice is paid. See Settings, cost and limits for how the rest of the plan behaves.
- Cancel or downgrade below the plan that includes the number: the connector enters Closing with a 30-day port-out window, shown as “Releasing on <date>” on the card. Re-subscribing before that date reverses it.
- Release (the button on the card): closes the number immediately and permanently. This is not reversible; use it only when you are sure.
- Delete: the connector cannot be deleted while its number is still live or closing. Release it (or let the window run out) first; then Delete removes the connector and detaches it from agents.
Porting a number out
Numbers can be ported to another carrier during the 30-day window after a closure. Ask support for the account details the receiving carrier needs; we will not release the number early while a port is in progress.
